My name is Cedric Lohse. I am an international student from Germany who moved to the United States in 2016 for my wife Cecilia, who is originally from Missouri, and our 2-year-old son Oliver. I am currently studying Engineering Technology Management as my Masters at Missouri Western State University.
Just studying wasn’t enough for me, I also wanted to apply my gained knowledge in an internship. One of my professors at the university reached out to me for an internship at Herzog Contracting Corporation. After a long-lasting way applying for permanent residency, I received my Green Card in May 2017. This paved the way for my internship as an estimator at Herzog. Now, I am working fulltime during the breaks and part time during the semester in order to concentrate on school. This is what I was looking for, to get work experience in the construction industry, before getting a full-time job in this industry.
I chose to work in the construction industry, because it represents what I believe in. I am an achiever who likes to see progress and results. In this industry, you can have a sense of accomplishment when you have a finished project or in my case, when all the hard work of estimating a project leads to a competitive bid, that wins the job for your company. Through this, you get an immediate feedback of what you have worked for. This is what motivates me every day when I come to work.
I am also a team player who works best when collaborating with others. At Herzog, you must work with other estimators in the company or JV partners together to be able to complete the workload for one project. Everyone depends on one another, which in turn builds a strong network.
Last but not least, I want to develop further. Every new project I am working on is like no other and brings new interesting challenges. You have no job stagnation that leaves you with the same tasks over and over. This continuous process of learning is what I am looking for.
Next to my personal development, I will also admit that the financial aspect is of importance for me. I have a little family to take care of and in the construction industry you can earn a good living when devoted to your job. This ensures a financially secure future for my family and me.
In general, I love working at Herzog, because they give you responsibility by letting you work on your own projects and by trusting your estimates. This is what drives me in preforming the best I can.
