My name is Alex Klein and this summer I interned for Royal Electric Company. I am so lucky to have received an internship opportunity after only completing my first year of college. I am now a second year civil engineer major at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo from Sacramento, California. I was introduced to the engineering field my freshman year of high school when I enrolled in the Building Trades Academy at Sheldon High School. Although I was set to go to another high school in my neighborhood, the program at Sheldon intrigued me and I knew that I wanted to attend there, even if it meant leaving a lot of my childhood friends. In the upper level classes, I constructed multiple sheds to help fund our program and competed twice in the Sacramento Regional Builders Exchange (SRBX) Design/Build Competition held at Cosumnes River College, winning a Best In Show Award, Craftsmanship Award, and Safety Team Award. After all this experience, I knew construction was a perfect fit for me. For my internship, I was located in San Francisco to work as a project engineer on the jobs Royal had at San Francisco International Airport. I chose to do this internship in construction because I have been around it all my life and knew I wanted to pursue a career in this field. Construction has always fascinated me. As a child, I remember being amazed at the sight of huge buildings and bridges being built. I wanted to be a part of something rewarding while challenging myself. I feel satisfied and proud when I complete a project with my owns hands. In addition, I also feel fulfilled designing a project and seeing it completed.
