School: Louisiana State University
Major: Construction Management
Company: Industrial Specialty Contractors, LLC
Internship from December 1, 2015 — January 31, 2017
I am from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I am attending Louisiana State University (LSU) with a major in Construction Management. I became interested in this field after hearing several speakers talk to my high school. I knew this is what I wanted to pursue my career in whenever I first came to LSU. I chose to do an internship in construction to learn and develop my skills in the industry, while at the same time being an asset to a company to aid in their success. While I have a lot to learn about the industry, I have great communication skills and have the ability to work well with others which can immediately be beneficial to a company. The more I am learning about this field, the more I know that I chose the right career path for myself. I am currently an intern at ISC, LLC which began in December of 2015. During the semesters I work in the office part time and in the summer I worked full time.
What results did you achieve on the internship, and how did you exceed the company's expectations for your role?
My internship has been very rewarding. My initial assignment was in the field at Exxon Mobil Chemical Plant. I ran conduit around benzene tanks connecting it to multiple benzene detectors. I entered everyday with a positive attitude, worked my assignment in detail, and worked in conjunction with my team to complete the task at hand. After this field work, I was invited to work in their corporate office during my spring semester. As a new intern, I moved to get involved in all of their daily work. I feel I have exceeded their expectations due to the fact that I am invited to work with different departments and assist them with new projects. For example, I have began to work with another coordinator to estimate new projects. Also, my company needed help at the CF Industries plant in Donaldsonville, LA so they asked me to help out at that location for a month to get the problem solved. I felt honored that they asked me and feel like I exceeded their expectations due to my ability to solve the problem.
What did you learn in this internship that will affect your life in a positive way?
I learned many positive aspects of life from working at ISC, LLC. I learned the importance of learning the task at hand, taking pride of your work, and being confident in what you do on the job. I also learned the importance of working as a team while still having to maintain your personal assignments at hand. These are lessons that will affect my life in a positive way because I realize the importance of having a great work ethic and having high standards with your work.
How were you involved with safety and/or quality during your internship, and how did that change your perspective on construction?
I have taken the OSHA safety classes in order to be allowed to work in the field. At ISC, safety is one of the biggest concerns. While I was in the field at Exxon, we had a safety meeting twice a week with other crews before the day started. We also had to fill out Job Safety Analysis packets before we would start on our daily task. It changed my perspective on construction because I realized that our own personal health is much more important to the companies than the job at hand. They would rather us stop the task at hand if we saw it was dangerous or put anyone at a risk of injury. The training has given me an appreciation of the dangers that exist in the construction industry and the importance of doing everything you can to prevent being injured. They want to see you go home after work safe and unharmed.
After reviewing www.IBuildAmerica.com, tell us what I Build America means to you?
I Build America means a lot to me. Construction is all round us in our everyday lives. We are a part of the ongoing changes to our world. To be in this field is a huge honor to me because it shows that I am making a difference in our world. It shows that I am a part of the change and growth of our community. It means so much to me to contribute to the success of a company that also aids in the improvement to a community as a whole.
