School: Iowa State University
Major: Construction Engineering
Company: City of Ames
Internship from May 9, 2016 — December 16, 2016
My name is Noah Collins and I study Construction Engineering at Iowa State. I am active in many of the organizations at school and in the community, such as the Student Government and Story County Republican Central Committee. I work for the City of Ames as a Senior Engineering Tech Coop. I chose construction as field of study because of the changing work environment and different challenges everyday. The outside work environment while working with different types of people makes work interesting and varied.
What results did you achieve on the internship, and how did you exceed the company's expectations for your role?
Working for the City of Ames as an I achieved the successful completion of several Federally funded projects as well as smaller city work. Continued upkeep of quantities and work related paperwork. I exceeded expectations of my employer by personally working with contractors, directly and independently to solve problems in a timely manner.
What did you learn in this internship that will affect your life in a positive way?
While working for the city I have leaned and become certified as a PCC level 1 technician. I have also learned how many of the processes that the city uses in the bidding through the close out processes. Most importantly I’ve learned how to deal with the public. Assuring homeowners that their concerns are taken into account and the city takes them very seriously.
How were you involved with safety and/or quality during your internship, and how did that change your perspective on construction?
As an inspector my whole job was to ensure quality. The toughest part is learning and remembering all the specifications that come from SUDAS and on top of that the special city regulations that were required. It showed me that all the government oversight had a purpose and were the result of learned from mistakes.
After reviewing www.IBuildAmerica.com, tell us what I Build America means to you?
I Build America is a mindset rather than a saying. It’s about being proud of your work rather than cutting corners to make a larger profit. It’s about working long days in the hot weather to achieve a product that I can be proud of. Sometime its requires thinking outside the box and others using tried and true methods. Overall it’s about showing that those who build this nation are the unsung heroes that Are key to keeping America Great.
