School: Old Dominion University
Major: Civin and Environmental Engineering
Company: Waterfront Marine Construction (I+Icon Southeast)
Internship from May 16, 2016 — August 26, 2016
My name is John Papademas and I am a rising senior at Old Dominion University. I was born in Athens, Greece and I moved to the United States when I was 16 years old. My major is Civil and Environmental Engineering and I recently picked a minor in Environmental Engineering. I chose to do a construction internship because I would like to pursue a career as a Project Manager in a Construction Company. I currently work for Infrastructure and Industrial Constructors Southeast (I+ICON Southeast).
What results did you achieve on the internship, and how did you exceed the company's expectations for your role?
I achieved my results to the fullest that I could possibly do, meaning that I was on top of all the assignments by submitting them on time and being able to help out the project manager that I was working with.
What did you learn in this internship that will affect your life in a positive way?
In my internship, I learned to look over the plans and estimate the proper material that had to be used in order to complete the project. I was assigned to go out on the field and oversee my coworkers in order to make sure that they were doing the proper work to finish the project. I was also assigned a project on my own in order to help built a deck that would be used to carry heavy materials on the back of the trailer. I learned how to collaboratively work with my fellow coworkers and achieve the deadline for completing a project.
How were you involved with safety and/or quality during your internship, and how did that change your perspective on construction?
I was involved with safety during my internship because we had to make sure that an employee had the proper equipment in order to go out on the field. The proper equipment would include, a hard hat, steel toe boots, a vest, safety glasses and gloves. It changed my perspective on construction because it helps to prevent a lot of injuries that may occur in the field.
After reviewing www.IBuildAmerica.com, tell us what I Build America means to you?
I Build America means that we can understand the value that construction provides to us. It helps to hire young people to work in a construction company. It helps you to work as a team. Also, it emerges people to be more safe when they see a worker behind a construction company.
