School: South Dakota State University
Major: Construction Management
Company: Dannys Construction
Internship from May 6, 2016 — August 18, 2016
My name is Eric Gerdes, and I am from Savage, Minnesota. I go to college in South Dakota at South Dakota State University. I have 6 years of experience in construction and now I am an intern as a project manager. I enjoy building America, and being part of growing the future. I chose to do this internship because I thought it would be a great opportunity for me, and I could learn many different points of view in the construction industry.
What results did you achieve on the internship, and how did you exceed the company's expectations for your role?
I achieved many different goals during this internship. I was able to estimate a few different jobs, ranging from small week long jobs, to longer year long jobs. I think this benefited me because I now see both the pre construction part of the job, and from prior experience, I have seen the on-site part of construction. I also achieved the leadership role. Most people don’t look up to someone who is younger then them on site, or in the office. During my internship I was able to take that responsibility and lead jobs to success. I think the Company I did the internship for was very impressed with my achievements as I estimate jobs and lead them to succeed.
What did you learn in this internship that will affect your life in a positive way?
I learned many lessons and points of views that will affect my life in a positive way. I learned that some jobs don’t go as planned and sometimes issues arise and to solve them you just have to work through them. This will help me because life doesn’t always go as planned and when a big issues comes along, I will be able to work through it.
How were you involved with safety and/or quality during your internship, and how did that change your perspective on construction?
The company I worked for takes safety very seriously. After doing an internship with them, I relies how important safety is on a job site. I also relies how easily safety can fail, and issues can occur. This changed my perspective on construction because I know see it as more of a dangerous job that with the proper techniques and rules, dangerous incidents can be prevented.
After reviewing www.IBuildAmerica.com, tell us what I Build America means to you?
When I hear the worlds I Build America, I think of construction. I think of people of different construction trades getting together to build America to something even better then what it already is.
