School: Ball State University
Major: Construction Management
Company: Garmong Construction
Internship from 5/4/15 — 11/16/15
Starting in May 2015 to current, I have worked for Garmong Construction based out of Indianapolis, Indiana. I was the Project Engineer/Assistant Superintendent intern for the Courtyard Marriott hotel and Parking Garage in downtown Muncie, Indiana. My everyday commute was an hour and a half one-way, talk about some miles.
The Courtyard Marriott hotel is going to be the first of its kind in the world. The hotel is sponsored and controlled by Arc Innovations and General Hotels Corporation. The hotel is going to act as a teaching hotel and training facility for individuals with disabilities to work and receive the proper training needed to work in hotel staffs across the country. These individuals will receive training in hospitality management, guest services, housekeeping, kitchen staff, etc. Arc Innovations plans on having around 60% of the hotel staff being individuals with disabilities. The hotel has a substantial completion date of November 9th, with a grand opening date on December 21st.
What results did you achieve on the project(s), and what impact did they have on the company?
During this internship, one of my main priorities on this project was daily schedule tracking. Since I was on-site everyday and worked from 7am – 5pm, every evening around 4pm, I had to walk the site with a specific schedule of key activities that are ongoing, and check progress. For example, for each room on each floor, I had to check and see what rooms were complete with framing, plumbing rough-ins, electrical rough-ins, fire caulking, insulation, drywall, drywall finishing, paint, etc. and see where each subcontractor lacked during that day. This was a critical step for when to schedule inspections, and for the Garmong team to pay special attention and communicate directly with the necessary subcontractors who were starting to lack in certain activities.
