School: University of Houston
Internship from 6/2/14 — 8/7/15
I have worked with DuPont Chemical EPCM company through Master Service with KBR and the project include: Burnside CIP / HIP Exchanger Replacement – PD, TFP Expansion – Eldorado, LA Porte PSA Sulfur Storage Tank Replacement, and Low Niter 20% Oleum Production and Loading Projects.
I was also involved in a Gas Processing project. This was WEST NIGER DELTA (WEND) – CENTRAL GAS PROCESSING FACILITY (Interacting with numerous companies such as Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Chevron, Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC), Sahara Energy Resources Limited, Granherne, and ILF Consulting Engineers).
What results did you achieve on the project(s), and what impact did they have on the company?
By working in these projects, I was able to achieve experience and get a hands on actual feeling of a real project. I am glad that I have this great opportunity and this lead to getting much more familiar with the work that is being done in the industry in a huge scale.
I was able to meet with experienced and knowledgeable people and this contributed to my understanding of projects in real world.
What real-life technical or business skills did you learn during the internship?
Being more familiar with Scheduling and Cost Control in the reality and their importance in controlling project was the main outcome of such learning period. I was able to learn from experienced people and ask my questions so this way I earned required business skills for the job. Also gaining the required knowledge was the outcome of talking with the people who are performing the the job.
What did you learn in this internship that will affect your life in a positive way?
Being in the real project and trying to apply the project mindset in my own life is one of the most important aspects that positively affects my future. Also this learning opportunity led to an inspiration to follow the path for being a part of construction industry and try to enter top tier companies and this will influence my future in a meaningful way.
Where do you think technology will make the biggest impact in construction in the next few years, and how will it do that?
In my view, Technology is the power train for any industry, especially for the construction. If we focus on our surroundings, we can’t find areas that technology didn’t impact. For instance all the construction tools and machines have been sophisticated and we can take an example of excavators or haulers. Recently developed machines make life much easier and faster in comparison to previous technology used and if we look back in previous generations, when everything were being done by man-power we can feel it much more. This is clear and considerable in construction industry and even EPC contractors as a part of the family, are benefiting from new technologies that reduce the required time and budget for doing the same work as it could take previously.
I think technology will take as to a place that all construction work being done by automated machines and looking at the industry from this aspect, will form a much more safe, cost-wise and less time project executions while saving the owners time and money.
